In the video above posted by CarWow – the Land Rover Discovery goes up against the Toyota Land Cruiser, Audi Q7 and the Volkswagen Touareg.
SPOILER ALERT :
The discovery takes the cake and beats all of them – yes, even the Land Cruiser.
HOWEVER – the Discovery may not have made such a clean win, because I noticed are a few things in this video which I shall discuss below (granted, I myself am no expert in car tug of wars and these are just observations) :
1. Matt Watson (who’s driving the Toyota Land Cruiser, Audi Q7 and the Volkswagen Touareg) – keeps flooring the cars (at times).
This makes the cars lose traction while Yanni (in the Discovery) is gently pressing the throttle so his car still has plenty of traction. Yanni also seems to know when best to throttle the car, as compared to Matt. Perhaps he’s more experienced?
Another thing you notice : the losing car usually starts tugging first, on the grass and mud, until it starts spinning its wheels. At this point the discovery just steps on the throttle a little and off it goes, since the other car is already slipping. What if the Discovery tugged first?
2. Is Land Rover’s terrain response system a factor in the discovery’s win?
Land Rovers are synonymous with off roading. And this video shows it. Some viewers commented that the Terrain Response system is more advanced than the ones found in the Land Cruiser, Q7 and the Touareg, since the car company is specialised in off roading – more of their resources can be put into perfecting the Terrain Response system (which they have to, since that’s one of the main selling points of Land Rovers).
Land Rover’s grass gravel and snow mode will help the tires avoid slipping on low traction terrain such as grass in the video, the gearbox will manage low engine revs and the throttle will have a soft response.
In the video, we also did not see what setting Yanni put his car in.
3. Different tires?
Tires are the only contact the car has with the ground, and in a test like this – they are especially important. We aren’t sure if the cars have the same set of tires on them
4. Swap cars
To make it a fair test and find out which car is better at tug of war – they should have swapped cars (Matt and Yanni swap cars). This will isolate the winning factor down to the ability of the driver, since it’s a more fair fight that both drivers and cars had an equal chance to redeem themselves.
